Fangirling

I’ve noticed something about myself. I turn into a total fangirl when I’m talking to published authors. If I’m talking to a published author, I’m internally going, “OH MY GOSH. THIS PUBLISHED AUTHOR IS TALKING TO ME. AND THEY ARE NOT ANNOYED. AND THEY ARE GIVING ME ADVICE. AND THEY SEEM TO THINK IT’S COOL SOMEONE MY AGE IS INTERESTED IN WRITING. AND THEY’RE TALKING TO ME. OH MY GOSH. WE’RE LAUGHING TOGETHER. HOLY CRAP. WHAT IS THIS? IS MY LIFE REALLY THIS AWESOME?”

Even if I’ve never read their work, I get like that. It’s just my nature. I don’t think I’m alone in this. I was doing research on Connie Willis for a presentation I did for a class, and I noticed that she was thrilled to be on the same list as some of her favorite authors. She was practically squeeing on her website. It was nice to see that, honestly. It’s good to see humbleness like that. It reminds me that we’re all humans and that we all have things to squee over.

I don’t know if that will ever go away with me. It might dwindle down to just people whose stuff I’ve read, but that would suck a bit, because some of my favorite authors are dead. A lot of them are, actually. I want to keep getting excited. I don’t want to be so far up or so full of myself that I don’t get excited about meeting other authors. I don’t think that will happen. But it’s something I was thinking about. This is a good place for me to get these thoughts out there. I don’t think I’m alone in this.

Or maybe I am. That’s cool, too. I’m okay with being unique. But if you don’t get excited about meeting other authors, then maybe you should think about why that is. Really consider it. Get to the root of it.

Write a short story where your main character either is a published author meeting a fan or is a fan meeting an author. Or an actor/actress. Whatever you’re a big fan of. And please, don’t make it fanfiction. Make a person up. This is about being creative, not writing out your dreams on paper. I mean, you can do that, too (as in in addition to this assignment), but I want you to step out of your little box for a few minutes for this one.
