Angry? Stop whatever you’re doing and take a minute to breathe. Feel free to cry. Crying is okay. It releases stress hormones, effectively flushing them out of your body.
Make a fist until your fingernails dig into your palm and you feel a bit of pain from it.
Count to ten.
Sit down wherever you write.
And write something. Anything. Write about how you’re feeling. Write a character in your situation or a similar one. Or, if you need a bit of an escape, write about something completely unrelated to your troubles. Make a happy ending, no matter how cheesy it is.
Or maybe you’re not calm in a way that has nothing to do with emotions.
Did you just find out about something that will affect your life in a big way? Write it. The good and the bad.
If it’s going to affect you negatively: Don’t bottle it up. Don’t talk to anyone about it until you’ve had a chance to write about it. But write the good things that can come out of it.
If it’s a good thing: Squeal first. Then write it. Hey, I’m not a good-mood-killer, so I’m not going to tell you to write about the negatives. Just enjoy it.
