A word on pacing:

Though loading your characters with failure and suffering can be useful, also remember that some of the most tense moments of a story are when the protagonists seem to have the upper hand: 

When they’ve won. 
When they have something amazing to lose. 
When the reader knows they have nowhere left to go but down, down, down. 

(That’s when you follow through and crush them again.)
