Photographer Accuses Cover Artist Of Elizabeth Acevedo Novel ‘The Poet X’ Of Plagiarism
It’s unlikely anyone with a pulse on the YA/ book cover scene doesn’t already know about this, but doing my due diligence by reposting this big slice of yikes here. Friendly reminder that pinterest pins aren’t yours for the Doing Whatever With– photography is something you have to purchase rights to use commercially like any other art (and that shit is typically expensive, as it should be).
Relatedly worth noting, there’s been a quiet shift on YA/writer twitter this year away from using pinterest pins and the like for promotional “aesthetics” (which I talked about via my other blog a while back, for the unfamiliar) on account of similar, if less explicit, ethical concerns. Fortunately, free stock sites like pixabay and unsplash provide great, no-legal-gray-area alternatives and as a bonus spare me personally from having to see the same exact inspiration images in ten thousand people’s collages with different filters.
