Friendly writer’s tip:

When you write vague things involving your point of view character not understanding what another character’s momentary expression or tone of voice or odd action implied, consider:

  •  Add yourself a note describing what it actually meant.

We might have a lot of faith in our Future Selves, but when said Future Selves are overtired and speed-editing something written six month ago and have no idea what that one vague comment was supposed to be about, our Future Selves will thank us for not holding them in eternal suspense.

Or at least, my future self will thank me, when I actually start doing this.

I have many a stories that I have no idea where they were supposed to go – and many a scene that was unfinished because of this reason.
